Quarantine Tanks Not Just for Sick Fish
In addition to setting up an aquarium for the aquatic environment of your dreams, as a dedicated aquarist, you need to have an alternative home for new or ill fish. It is recommended that every new fish be quarantined for at least a few days before being introduced into its permanent home in your aquarium. This is so the fish can recover from the stress of transport, adjust to new water conditions in a stress-free environment, and gain the strength it needs to resist disease. Fish that are diseased also need a place to recuperate before returning to the main aquarium, to avoid spreading the condition to the whole population.

Observe your new fish's behavior and, if it seems healthy, return it to the main tank. If not, give it several days in quarantine and apply medication. The dosage and the amount of water to be changed each day depend on the medication's specifications. Make sure that you remove the activated carbon from your filtration system, since it will absorb the medication. When the fish is cured, remove the medication and put back the activated carbon to clear the water. Observe for a few more days before returning it to the main aquarium. Remember, it is much harder to get rid of disease in the main aquarium, because it requires more medication for a bigger tank and the other fish may be compromised.

A small aquarium kit is easy to use and inexpensive. It comes with an integrated filtration system for easy setup and maintenance for freshwater or saltwater aquariums. The quarantine tank requires the same equipment as the aquarium: a filter, lighting, and a heater. An integrated aquarium system will only need a heater added on. You will not need substrate, but shelter must be provided. Artificial plants and decorations with room to hide will suffice.

The water parameters in the quarantine tank should be identical to those in the aquarium. These should be tested with a thermometer and test kit. You can use water from the aquarium to fill the quarantine tank for this purpose. The tank will need to be conditioned and cycled just like the aquarium. Keep a log of your fish's needs and behavior while inhabiting the quarantine tank. Certain disease-causing organisms like Ich may take several days to develop. Monitoring its symptoms will allow you to take the proper precautions before returning the fish to the main aquarium. Quarantine tanks also come in handy in the event of an emergency, such as an aquarium leak. Because conditions in the quarantine tank mimic those of the aquarium, a transfer is easy and convenient. You can avoid losses if you follow these simple guidelines for setting up a temporary/alternative home for your new or sick fish.
